Window AC maintenance — yes, we still do it properly

Thousands of window units are still cooling Qatar's villas, majlis rooms, shops and staff housing. We keep them running cold, quiet and safe.

The units everyone else has stopped servicing

Most AC companies in Doha quietly turned their backs on window units years ago — there's more money in splits. We didn't, for a simple reason: a huge amount of Qatar still runs on them. Older villas, extensions, garages, portacabins, shops and labour accommodation all lean on window ACs, and a well-kept unit will happily run for fifteen years.

The catch is that everything lives in one box. Compressor, both coils, fan motor and thermostat sit centimetres apart, so dust and salt air get at all of it at once. When a window unit loses its cooling, the whole chassis usually needs opening up — which is exactly what our service does.

Scope of work

What a window AC service includes

Window AC condenser coil exposed for cleaning and inspection
  • Front grille and filter washed or replaced
  • Evaporator and condenser coils chemically cleaned
  • Fan blades and motor cleaned, bearings oiled
  • Drain tray cleared and flushed
  • Thermostat and selector switch tested
  • Gas pressure and compressor amps checked
  • Mounting, seals and sleeve inspected — no rattles, no hot air leaking in
  • Full chassis pull-out and wash available on request

Takes about 40–50 minutes per unit in place, or a bit longer if we pull the chassis for a workshop-grade wash.

Troubleshooting

Window AC problems we see every week

Blowing air, not cooling

Almost always a condenser coil packed with dust. The compressor can't reject heat, so it cycles off. A chemical wash brings the cold back.

Rattling and vibration

Loose mounting frames, tired rubber grommets or a bent fan blade. Small parts, big difference to your sleep.

Tripping the breaker

Old window units draw hard on start-up. A weak capacitor or corroded wiring makes it worse — both are quick, inexpensive fixes.

Water dripping inside the room

The unit should tilt slightly outward so condensate drains away. Blocked trays and wrong tilt are five-minute corrections.

Musty smell on start-up

Mould in the coil and drain tray. We clean and sanitise the airway so the first blast of air doesn't smell like a wet carpet.

Weak airflow

Clogged filter, dirty blower, or a fan motor running slow. We check all three rather than guessing.

Worth knowing

Window vs split: should you switch?

We get asked this on most window AC visits, so here's the honest comparison:

Keep the window unitUpgrade to a split
Upfront costNothing — service costs a fraction of replacementUnit + installation + wall works
Running costHigher per hour of coolingInverter splits use noticeably less power
NoiseCompressor is in the room with youCompressor sits outside — much quieter
Lifespan15+ years if serviced10–15 years if serviced
Makes sense whenUnit is healthy, room is occasional-use, rental propertyDaily-use bedrooms and living rooms, high summer bills

If a switch does make sense, we install splits too — but we'll never push a replacement when a service will do. Ask us during the visit and you'll get a straight answer either way.

FAQ

Window AC questions

Is it worth servicing an old window AC, or should I just replace it?

If the compressor is healthy, a deep service usually restores most of the original cooling for a fraction of the cost of a new unit. We test the compressor first — and if the unit isn't worth spending money on, we'll say so before you spend it.

Can you take the unit out for a proper wash?

Yes. For heavily soiled units we pull the full chassis out of its sleeve, wash it properly outside, then refit and reseal it in the same visit.

Do window ACs need gas top-ups?

Only if there's a leak — gas isn't consumed. Window units are factory-sealed, so they actually leak less than splits. Weak cooling is far more often a dirty coil than low gas.

Do you service window ACs in staff accommodation and portacabins?

Yes, regularly — including bulk servicing for multiple units in one visit, which brings the per-unit price down. Ask about it on WhatsApp.

One unit or twenty — send us a message and we'll come back with a per-unit price and the next available slot.
